My name’s Lauren. I’m a twenty something high school English teacher and I’m currently struggling with whether or not to foster a dog. I’m a dog lover, have had dogs my entire childhood but have yet to get one in my adult life. My boyfriend and I do want a dog but want to make sure that we can handle it, so we thought about trying to foster because we have the love and space to handle a pup until their furever home. For us, it would be the easiest way to give back to those who need love most. I just wanted your thoughts on fostering and if there were any struggles or challenges you found you’ve had with fostering.

Hi Lauren,
Thanks for the note. Fostering is wonderful! It’s a very rewarding experience and a great way to help out dogs in need – animal rescues could use many more foster homes than they have. With that being said, make sure you find a reputable rescue group to foster for and go from there. Do you have a rescue you are thinking of fostering for? Keep in mind that it is obviously still a commitment and can have it’s challenges at times because these dogs are thrown into a new situation, often coming from a kennel, etc. and it does take them some time to settle into their routine – just like us. Sometimes they can be sick when they first come into your home, sometimes they have crate anxiety, sometimes they’re easy peasy. It all depends on the dog. Puppies are of course different (and are often adopted much faster), but be prepared for potty training (this can be true with some adult dogs, too of course if they came from a shelter life or other situation). Patience, care, understanding, and love is all they really need from you – the rescue will provide the essentials (food, crate, vet care, etc.)…I think you’ll love it!

Hope all is going well in Colorado! I live in Minneapolis and have always been grateful you put a picture of my senior pittie mix in the upper left hand corner of the block of pictures that went with the post about what we love about our pitties. Drew passed October 2016 and it meant a lot to stumble again across her picture on the post recently. I was there looking for the peanut butter banana flax dog cookie recipe and my computer will not let that recipe come up due to identification of Malware. Thought you should know and was wondering if you could Email the recipe since it is a favorite cookie for my dogs. Thanks for what you do with your posts on facebook and you website. Makes me happy.

Thanks for the comment – sorry to hear about Drew :(. Thanks for bringing that to my attention! Here’s the recipe:
1 cup whole wheat flour (can be substituted with rice or coconut flour for a grain free option)
1/2 banana, mashed
1/3 cup peanut butter
2 Tbsp ground flax seed
1/4 cup almond milk (unsweetened)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Combine all ingredients in a medium mixing bowl.
Mix ingredients together thoroughly using a spatula until well combined.
Roll out mixture on a floured surface to approximately 1/4″. Cut into desired shapes. Repeat with remaining dough.
Place on a nonstick baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.

Chicken Wild Rice Dog Treat Recipe Plan to make this recipe for Schatzi & her friends, but have a question about the pan that being used. From the picture, my first guess would be a mini cupcake tin – but wanted to see if you used “papers” to line the tins or spray the pan with Pam.

I stumbled onto your blog while looking for dog treats for my Golden Quigley, who will be 14 on October 4. People often assume that because he is 14, he must be in pain, have Hip problems, blah blah blah. For the love I get from my babies, I give it right back when the time comes to say goodbye. Tagent done.
I love your tutorial on nails. My 7 yr old Dane/lab mix Bentley has the fastest growing (all black) nails and I’m terrified to do them myself. You mention filing the nails to reduce the quick. What file do you use? What do you think about a Dremmel?

THanks for your comment. Sorry for the delay, I’m not on here as much as I once was :). I just use a regular course nail file (from Target or wherever). We’ve tried a dremmel, but Lola isn’t a fan :).
